Mindful Money

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to learn about Mindful Money, A financial literacy course intended to demystify money and personal finance for high school students. The creation of this course was inspired by my father, a mortgage officer who volunteers in schools in his community to teach young people about financial literacy. The reason that he likes to volunteer is because across the United States, financial literacy is often not a mandatory unit of learning. High school students will often graduate having very little consciousness about money or finance, thus setting them up to struggle with managing their personal finances as adults. I wanted to create a course that helps to address this gap in education.

This course is designed for high school students looking to build a strong foundation in financial literacy. The units include:

  1. Understanding Income and Expenses
  2. Budgeting Basics
  3. Saving and Investing
  4. Credit and Debt Management
  5. Financial Planning and Insurance
  6. Smart Consumer Skills
  7. How the Economy Works
  8. Understanding Taxes
  9. Loans and Mortgages
  10. Moving Out
  11. Opening a Bank Account
  12. Buying your first car

By the end of the course, students will understand how to create and adjust budgets, manage different types of income and expenses, and make informed decisions about saving and investing. They will also learn how to use credit responsibly, navigate the complexities of filing taxes, and plan for significant life events such as moving out and taking out loans or mortgages. By teaching students about practical matters like buying a car or earning an income, they will be more engaged in the learning process. The course uses accessible language and practical examples to ensure that all learners, regardless of their prior knowledge, can grasp essential financial concepts and apply them in real life.
