Cooking Up Beats crafts songs from the sounds of diverse cuisines, fostering cultural understanding and community unity. This 2-minute track is just one example of combining sounds from cooking chicken soup (my comfort food these days) to make a song.
I decided to pursue this project because it is a marriage of the two hobbies I’ve been interested in: DJing (for a few years now) and cooking (a new hobby I picked up after coming to HGSE). After PCE, I hope to continue this project by inviting peers to come over to my place and have one person share how they make their national dish/comfort food. I will record some sounds as they cook and make it into a song. Another idea I have is to collaborate with cultural clubs at HGSE and see if they can share their national dishes.
This project was a learning experience for me. I have never played around with music production and music production software, so tinkering with Garageband was the core of the learning experience.
