For my project, I have created a lesson plan for fifth graders in Turkiye. This lesson plan includes 12 hours which equals 3 days classes. My main focus is STEM teaching, especially biology. Biology was my favorite course when I was younger. Therefore, I wanted to create educational materials and lesson plan for my favorite course First day, students will learn about mushrooms’ general features and poisonous features.
For this day, I created an AI generated short storybook and follow up activities. I have used Storybird.Ai tooI for my short storybook. I choose to create a storybook because, according to my literature reviews, biology teaching though storytelling method is one of the most effective methods. After reading the storybook, student will have a chance to go to field trip that create engaging learning environment for them.
Second day, they will learn about microscopic creatures, their similarities and differences between plants, animals, and mushrooms through the short video. For second day video, I have used Invideo.ai tool to create short educational video. Harmful and beneficial mushrooms will be also mentioned. I will use this video as an introductory content for our class. Student will have a chance to see real pictures and have open ended questions during the video watching time.
Third day, I will design a VR game. Students will explore animals, plants, mushrooms, microscopic creatures’ cells in VR environment. Through the VR environment I wanted to use constructivist approach and student will analyze different parts of cells and understand similarities and differences by themselves. For example, they will touch a flower and they could analyze this flower’s cell.
My lesson plan include emerging technologies which are interesting for most students. Especially, I wanted to use gamification methods in my lesson plan to create engaging learning environment for students.
I have analyzed National Turkish Biology Curriculum for fifth graders and decided related topics according to national curriculum. Teachers need to follow specific subjects but they can create different learning materials for their students.
