In an increasingly diverse world that is struggling with a growing “loneliness plague,” it is important now more than ever for us to intentionally practice interacting with diverse people. Contrary to the political zeitgeist, diversity is far more about what makes us similar rather than what makes us different, and no single culture is a monolith. This new icebreaker game attempts to capture these principles.
The Cultural Connection Cards set is a deck of 50 cards, each containing a unique prompt designed to spark conversations and activities between players from diverse cultural and/or national backgrounds. Meant for young adults and older in social, academic, or professional settings, these prompts address 5 different topic areas that address the realms of “universal culture,” ie those arts and experiences that all nations and peoples participate in: music & dance, food & cuisine, language & communication, stories & media, and celebrations & festivals. By engaging in moments of whimsy, authenticity, and vulnerability, players become torchbearers for their own native culture(s) while taking meaningful steps towards beginning new relationships with people who may seem quite different from themselves at first glance.
