Handsify: ASL Learning App is an inclusive platform crafted for anyone interested in learning American Sign Language (ASL). Through interactive, step-by-step modules, Handsify helps beginners build foundational ASL skills—starting with vocabulary, advancing to phrases, and culminating in real-life conversation practice.
A standout feature is Handsify’s AI-powered quiz tool, which provides real-time feedback on signing accuracy, boosting users’ confidence and supporting immediate improvement. Beyond its learning tools, Handsify also includes a community space where both ASL learners and fluent users can connect, share tips, and support one another’s journey. This approach fosters a welcoming, community-driven environment while promoting language learning, making ASL more accessible.

Core Curriculum
The app’s curriculum is organized around three core stages for each topic:
- Word Acquisition: Learners begin by mastering individual words from various topics—like introductions, spelling names with ASL alphabets, and even elements of pop culture (e.g., trending songs). This keeps learning engaging and relevant.
- Phrase Formation: Users then progress to forming meaningful phrases, which enhances their fluency and ability to construct ASL sentences.
- Conversational Context: Finally, learners watch videos of real-life conversations using the words and phrases they’ve studied, building context and practical application skills.

Mascot
I chose the chameleon as the mascot because—just like the chameleon adapts to its environment, I want users to be able to adjust to different learning situations. Whether tackling a new subject or mastering a tricky concept, Handsify is designed to help you adapt, grow, and thrive—no matter where you are on your learning journey.

Design Journey
The design journey of Handsify began with a deep dive into the needs of ASL learners:
- Identifying Needs: I recognized a gap for people who want a flexible, affordable ASL learning tool. Unlike existing apps that focus mainly on isolated words and quizzes, Handsify aims to offer a more holistic approach.
- Defining Core Features: Core features were developed with a learning focus: interactive modules, AI-driven quizzes that provide real-time feedback on signing accuracy, and a community space for connecting with other learners and fluent signers. The AI element was designed to deliver personalized support, moving beyond basic quizzes to provide meaningful feedback on ASL practice.
- Incorporating Feedback: Feedback sessions were instrumental in refining the prototype. Early input helped simplify features for ease of use, while recent feedback emphasized improving AI integration and strengthening community elements, balancing these with time constraints.
- Prototyping and Testing: A functional prototype was created to test user interactions, prioritizing a seamless, intuitive design to make ASL learning accessible for all ages and skill levels.
