iT (I Teach)

In the diverse landscape of primary school education, a range of languages is commonly introduced to students. Despite the well-intentioned efforts to foster linguistic diversity through second language classes, a recurrent phenomenon occurs wherein students tend to default to using English. This tendency is particularly true of native-English-speaking students which may stem from the pervasive influence of the language in their daily lives, reinforced by media, technology, and social interactions outside the classroom. The prevalence of English as a global language often leads students to perceive it as the default mode of communication, even in second language classes.

To address this phenomenon, it becomes essential for educators to implement strategies that not only teach a second language but also cultivate an environment that encourages consistent usage. Incorporating interactive activities within the second language curriculum can enhance the relevance and applicability of the language, making it more likely for students to use it authentically both inside and outside the classroom. Additionally, fostering a positive attitude towards linguistic diversity and emphasizing the long-term benefits of multilingualism can contribute to a shift in mindset, reducing the inclination to default to English during second language classes.

iT, an in-class game show, seeks to bridge this gap by creating an environment where languages come to life. The game show format encourages native-English-speaking students to embrace linguistic diversity and actively participate in the preservation and celebration of minority languages. At the same time, iT allows for non-native English speakers to share what they know in their native languages.

The immersive nature of iT goes beyond traditional language learning methods. Through carefully curated challenges and activities, students are not merely spectators but integral participants in the language-learning journey. The incorporation of physical movement ensures that the learning experience is not confined to a desk but extends to the entire classroom, fostering a dynamic and engaging atmosphere. iT aims to redefine the conventional approach to language education by providing students with an immersive experience that seamlessly integrates physical movement, auditory input, collaborative learning, and most importantly, fun! Every section is designed for students to be able to open and go through the multiple doors that are incorporated in iT’s design.

Traditional language learning materials and methods often lack excitement and fail to capture the attention of students, leading to disengagement and a lack of enthusiasm for the languages being taught. Teachers almost always find themselves modifying activities to encourage students to participate and interact with each other.  iT addresses this issue by infusing the learning process with elements of play, ensuring that students not only actively participate but also develop a positive attitude towards the language presented to them.

By diving into iT, students are not only exposed to various language skills such as writing and speaking, but also cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation for diverse linguistic nuances. The game show format becomes a catalyst for breaking down language barriers and creating an inclusive space where every student feels empowered to contribute.

iT is not just a game show; it is a transformative approach to language education that prioritizes a vivid and dynamic implementation. iT aims to reshape the landscape of language learning, making it an enjoyable and memorable experience for students while simultaneously elevating the vitality of minority languages in the classroom.

iT is so intricately designed that it may no longer feel like a second language class!
