Teacher Transitions

“You are already doing the work of a learning designer, you just have to translate your experiences to show it”

Teacher turned Instructional Designer (paraphrased)

My Project

Target Audience: Classroom teachers looking to transition into Learning Design

Goal: Help teachers make the first step to see how to translate their past and current experiences to the role of a Learning Designer

For my LDIT PCE project, I designed a comparison chart that is meant to be a starter tool for classroom teachers who are exploring transitioning into Learning Design. The quote above was from a former teacher who made this transition from classroom teaching to becoming a learning designer. As I explored various aspects of being a learning designer and comparing that to my own experiences in the classroom, I realized that though often talked about and mentioned, it can be hard to draw parallels and similarities between these two roles. Through this, I hope to begin to give teachers the vocabulary and understanding of how to continue in their roles in educators in a different context and space.

WILD: What is Learning Design?

There are two main ways that this project helped me understand learning design.

Firstly, learning design is about creating learning materials for the intended audience. As an educator in the classroom, I consider myself a learning designer. However, this was the chance to begin designing learning materials for a different audience and in a different context.

Secondly, this project helped me gain more clarity to see how to understand how learning design can take different forms in different contexts. Through this project, I have begun this journey of understanding how to see the similarities and differences of learning design in different contexts (as a teacher designing for K-12 students and as a learning designer designing for adult learners)
