I designed “This Moment” as an EdTech journaling app for high schools to purchase, supporting teenagers through adolescence by enhancing reflection and personal growth. It provides individual accounts for a private, personalized, and interactive experience, allowing students to engage in regular reflections based on school events, courses, or personal experiences. By maintaining a growth journal, students can share parts with trusted individuals for guidance or gratitude, fostering habits of mind like curiosity, a growth mindset, empathy, and a strive for excellence.

- Maintain a confidential, AI-generated journal.
- Share entries with trusted individuals.
- Enhance the coaching/advisory process for personal development.
- Creative expression tools.
2. Educational Goal Alignment:

3. Addressing Traditional Reflection Challenges:

- Replace fear and inauthentic group reflections with private, engaging, and ethical AI guidance.
- Support in-depth follow-up interactions with trusted individuals to build more real-world connections.
4. Addressing Ethical Concerns with AI:
- Confidentiality is broken in cases of self-harm or harm to others, with alerts sent to guardians or school safety officials
- Prioritization on safe, supportive responses, following strict ethical guidelines
- Engagement time is limited to discourage excessive internet use, and for students with mental health challenges, the chatbot recommends offline reflection activities to reduce dependency.
My Reflection:
This EdTech product design project, my very first, has been a truly rewarding experience. This semester, I’ve gained more skills and tools than I ever anticipated through classes, workshops, and self-study, and I’m continually impressed by both the power of AI and my own learning capacity. In the design process, I now fully appreciate the phrase “Dream big, start small,” as well as the importance of thoroughly understanding the “jobs to be done” and prioritizing user experience. Meanwhile, in considering emerging technologies, I agree with my TF Liam’s perspective that it’s better for the course to err on the side of caution than to adopt a “move fast and break things” approach. For this reason, I’ve chosen a more cautious approach, balancing engagement features like personality in the AI chatbot or gamification elements, even if it means sacrificing a bit of excitement.
