Nurture Nest- Empowering low income parents with child development activities

In India, particularly among low-income families, there is limited access to resources and guidance for parents on the importance of early childhood development. Parents in these households often lack the information and tools needed to support their children’s cognitive, emotional, and physical growth, especially as child development concepts are new to many in these communities. This is for parents of age group 0-5 in karnataka.

The Nurture Nest project is designed to address this gap by providing accessible, culturally relevant child development resources to low-income parents, with a focus on families in Karnataka. The project’s goal is to empower parents with knowledge and practical tools that help them understand the foundational role they play in their child’s early learning journey.

The project is structured in two stages:

  1. Introduction through a Workshop: As a foundational step, Nurture Nest introduces parents to child development concepts through a basic workshop. This workshop covers basic ideas about cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development and covers the parents play in their child’s growth through everyday interactions. The workshop is conducted to ensure parents understand the importance of child development and also educate them about the importance of their actions during child development. Parents in India usually resort to disciplining their children when they feel the child isn’t obeying which definitely has negative effects while growing. This workshop is to discuss about these actions mainly and to cascade the utility of the app.
  2. Ongoing Engagement with an Activity App: Following the workshop, parents are introduced to an app containing child development activities tailored to children’s developmental stages. The app serves as an ongoing resource, providing parents with simple, engaging activities that align with the skills and concepts covered in the workshop. The content of the app will be in English and Kannada ensuring ease of operation. Parents would be able to see activities for different age groups from 0-2 years.

Through this approach, Nurture Nest seeks to make child development knowledge accessible and actionable for low-income families, ensuring parents have both the understanding and resources needed to support their children’s growth.
